Although maps are not a perfect and complete system for identifying fish-holding areas, the spots identified do work, most of the time. The examples I present in the following pages are not merely illustrations—they are actual lakes where I have caught fish. They are places that conform to a logical analysis of a bathymetric map, but they have also produced for me.
LAKE A—LITTORAL
There’s no better place to go right after a lake ices over than Lake A—or one with similar characteristics. This lake is about seventy acres in size, almost all of which is less than ten feet deep—except for a sliver of a basin that is just slightly more.
Lake A—and those like it—can be amazing right after ice in. Seventy acres is enough to support decent-sized fish, and you never know what you are going to get. You may get a good northern pike, walleye, or bass. You may also get trout or panfish, such as crappie or perch, depending on where you live and what species are normally available.
However, because of the shallow depth, ponds like this are quickly affected when the ice keeps the wind from recirculating and reoxygenating the water. The action normally stops a few weeks after the pond ices over. In severe winters, fish may die because there is no oxygen, and the water gets to near-freezing temperatures all the way to the bottom. Then, it may take years for the fishery to recover.
When a lake like this is good, it can be great. Although fish can be found anywhere in its waters, the slightly deeper area is by far the most productive. I’ve had good results in this type of lake where the deepest area was only eight feet.
